Mission and strategy

Wageningen UR Livestock Research develops knowledge for a sustainable and profitable livestock sector, converts this knowledge into practice-oriented solutions and innovations, and ensures that this knowledge is disseminated.

Worldwide, increasing numbers of people are gaining access to meat, dairy products and eggs; these products must be safe, healthy and, of course, good to eat. The products must also be produced in a responsible manner by a livestock industry which places increasingly high standards on the health and welfare of animals and on the reduction and prevention of harmful effects to the environment.

Wageningen UR Livestock Research holds a top international position in scientific research involving livestock systems and the nutrition, genetics, welfare and environmental impact of farm animals. Our insights are used by government agencies and public bodies, industry and civic organisations to make strategic choices that are backed by fundamental knowledge.

In addition, Wageningen UR Livestock Research is the market leader in integrating scientific knowledge from a variety of disciplines – in cooperation with clients and based on practical experience – into livestock concepts for the 21st century. Wageningen UR Livestock Research develops pioneering innovations and supports applications in the sustainable and profitable livestock industry of the future.

Wageningen UR Livestock Research has 265 staff, advanced research facilities in Lelystad and 9 experimental farms throughout the Netherlands. Wageningen UR Livestock Research is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre.
