The knowledge acquired at De Marke will be applied by the pioneering farms that are part of the project Koeien & Kansen, which investigates the effects of future environmental policy on general farming practice. Accordingly, the research results can be seen to have an impact on all aspects of modern dairy farming.
Policy spearheads
- Reducing greenhouse gases emission by 30% on 1990 figures
- Consolidation of low ammonia emission levels
- Consolidation of low nitrate levels in groundwater
- Farming without using artificial fertilisers:
- Encouraging soil fertility: phosphate, organic compounds and soil fauna
- Effects of fermented and separated manure on fertilised value, soil fertility, and on crop yield & quality
- Biogas extraction from manure (slurry)
- from biogas to ‘natural gas’ quality, which is then supplied to the grid and biogas-powered vehicles
- Development of small-scale biogas plant (farm-sized)
- Countryside, nature and biodiversity
- Improving animal health and reducing use of medicines
