The 'Socially Responsible Livestock Sector' research programme of Wageningen UR Livestock Research supports the transition to sustainable agriculture. It focuses on accelerating the production and mobilisation of innovative knowledge and support for promising initiatives. The programme includes many research projects, large and small, for which intensive cooperation is sought with other parties and research institutes, both inside and outside Wageningen UR. The programme is characterised by a major contribution from the professional livestock sector.
  • See www.verantwoordeveehouderij.nl for research projects based on animal welfare These projects study animal welfare, not as a luxury for a wealth society but as a essential precondition for sustainable production methods.
  • The State of the Animal.
  • To comply with animal welfare and animal health policy, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality intends to monitor the livestock sector in the Netherlands. The Ministry plans to publish an annual report on these topics: the State of the Animal. Wageningen UR Livestock Research has published a report which lists the indicators that can be used for the above monitor.

  • Econ Welfare.

The EU project EconWelfare has the aim of improving the level of animal welfare in Europe. The project began in September 2008 with a kick-off meeting in Amsterdam. The Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen UR is coordinating this project, in which the LEI also participates. The project will run until September 2011. Eight partners in various European regions are now participating in the project, and a ninth partner has been found in Macedonia. In the Balkan region, animal welfare is still given little attention, and by participating in EconWelfare mutual knowledge exchange will be improved. For this project, the European Union is also looking for large and small initiatives for improving animal welfare. If you have such an initiative, please contact the project leader Hans Spoolder.
