Worldwide, increasing numbers of people are gaining access to meat, dairy products and eggs; these products must be safe, healthy and, of course, good to eat. The products must also be produced in a responsible manner by a livestock industry that places increasingly high standards on the health and welfare of animals as well as on the reduction and prevention of harmful effects to the environment.
Wageningen UR Livestock Research performs applied and practice-oriented research in the areas of livestock and livestock systems. Our institute develops knowledge for a sustainable and profitable livestock sector, converts this knowledge into practice-oriented solutions and innovations, and ensures that this knowledge is disseminated. We integrate scientific knowledge from various disciplines – together with clients and stakeholders from practice – to develop livestock concepts for the 21st century. Our insights are used by government agencies and public bodies, industry and civic organisations to make strategic choices that are backed by fundamental knowledge.
Wageningen UR Livestock Research tackles themes that are topics of discussion in society or are expected to be in the future. We encourage discussion by conducting research projects that are clearly linked to our surroundings. We conduct high quality research with societal impact (Science for Impact). At the international, national and regional levels, Wageningen UR Livestock Research actively initiates, facilitates and participates in networks focusing on innovation, research, expertise and experience.

Our strength is the Livestock Approach:
By itself, knowledge is not sufficient to respond to trends and developments in the sector. Our innovative strength in developing integral solutions lies in our capacity to combine new and pre-existing expertise with professional process design. At the same time, the engagement of our extensive network of farms, businesses and public organisations is essential. This combination of expertise, process design, networks and practical application is unique; this is what we call the Livestock Approach. From this broad foundation, we are capable of realising innovative solutions in cooperation with the sector.
